Stanton thinks Spartans can turn season around
MSU quarterback Drew Stanton had probably his worst game of the season against Northwestern and admitted that he was trying to do too much himself. After some bowling and some golf, Stanton put the loss behind him and seemed more confident heading into the Indiana game according to the Detroit News and teammate Gordon Niebylski.
They went bowling Sunday and played golf Monday.
By Tuesday, Stanton was ready to move on and put the worst game of his career behind him.
“It just took time,” said Stanton, who threw three interceptions, equaling his total for the first six games combined. “But that stuff’s behind us now. You have to have a bad time to appreciate the good. Everybody struggles. Nobody goes their career having complete highs.”

Meanwhile Shannon Shelton of the Detroit Free Press reports that coach John L. Smith has replaced kicker John Goss with walk-on Matt Haughey. Haughey’s name isn’t very familiar with fans or the press since his name doesn’t appear in this year’s media guides or even on MSU’s online roster.
The few bits of information about Haughey, whom Smith has nicknamed “Chips-a-Haughey” as a play on the pronunciation of his name, come from the depth chart. He’s listed at 5-feet-9, 175 pounds.
Haughey was a placekicker at Bridgman High, a school of about 380 students near Lake Michigan. He also played goalkeeper for the soccer team, which realized his athletic ability could be used to prevent other teams from scoring, said Bridgman football coach Mike Nate.
