After Coppin State, a train wreck awaits MSU

Joe Rexrode of the Lansing State Journal wants MSU fans to enjoy todays game against Coppin State. The Spartans should dominate an Eagles team that lost by 28 points to Michigan a couple days ago. After that though, a murderer’s row of Big Ten opponents await the Spartans starting out with a game at Illinois on January 5th.

The No. 9 Spartans (11-2) are heavily favored to win today, as they wrap up their non-conference schedule against Coppin State (0-10) at Breslin Center. Then it’s on to No. 6 Illinois on Thursday, and a vicious beginning to the league’s most difficult Big Ten schedule. “Heavy favorite” will apply no more.

After the Illini, it’s at Wisconsin; home vs. Indiana; at Ohio State; home vs. Iowa; and at Michigan. Before February hits, the Spartans and their fans will know this team’s strengths, weaknesses and championship chances.

“Maybe that’s why I’m walking gingerly, I’m not as excited where our team’s at yet,” coach Tom Izzo said of MSU, which has won 10 straight for the first time since the 2000-01 season. “Because there’s a train wreck coming.”
