Majerus still not sure Ager is an NBA athlete
Much has been made by MSU fans over the confusing comments Rick Majerus had about Maurice Ager not being an “athlete” during a telecast earlier this season. Saturday’s game was the first time Majerus has called a Spartan game since the Maui Invitational and as Todd Schulz of the Lansing State Journal reports, Majerus still has some reservations about Ager being an NBA-caliber athlete.
Majerus saw every one of Ager’s shots from a half-court seat. Still, the former Utah coach didn’t exactly eat his words (no jokes here, please) when asked for his thoughts afterward.
“Ager’s a real good player,” Majerus said. “My statement got taken out of context.”
How so? Well, that’s where his words starting swirling, much like the Iowa defenders searching for Ager.
Majerus said he was referring to Ager not generating enough steals and deflections on defense. He said he was judging him “relative to being an NBA player.” Compared to a player such as former Wake Forest star and NBA rookie Chris Paul, Majerus said, “there’s a big void there.” Uh, OK.
