Three Spartans hope to impress NFL

NFLThe football futures of Eric Smith, Domata Peko, and Stefon Wheeler will probably come down to how well they can impress NFL scouts at this weekend’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Jon Malavolti of the Lansing State Journal reports that Smith is the Spartan that is likely to be taken highest in this year’s NFL Draft.

Jones, who publishes the NFL draft guide ‘The Drugstore List’, expects Smith to be a middle-to-late round pick. He thinks Wheeler, an offensive lineman aided by his versatility to play guard or tackle, will go in the late rounds. Jones didn’t expect Peko to be at the combine, which leads him to believe the defensive tackle was specifically requested by an NFL team to be invited, and would probably be drafted late on the second day.

For Smith, surviving the combine and getting drafted are the final steps in realizing a dream the Groveport, Ohio native has had since the seventh grade.

“I always thought about playing in the NFL,” Smith said. “Back then, I didn’t know if it would really happen or not, and now it’s finally becoming a reality.”
