Spartans fall in first round upset loss to George Mason

As Spartan fans watched 3rd-seed Iowa lose in dramatic fashion on Friday afternoon, many laughed, but even more began to feel pangs of nervousness. With upsets already maiming higher seeded teams in the first round, it was Michigan State’s turn to bat- and they struck out- losing to 11th seeded George Mason.
Trailing during much of the 2nd half, MSU rallied back to take a 52-51 lead before the wheels came off the bus. Before anyone could relax, the Patriots had charged back to take command.
Friday’s first-round loss was the final college basketball game for seniors Maurice Ager, Paul Davis, and Matt Trannon. It may also have been the final game for standout junior guard Shannon Brown- however, he has insisted he will return for the 2006-07 season.
After the NCAA Tournament field was announced on Sunday, it was asked, “Who is George Mason?” The Spartans found out.
