Ringer has chance to become a star at MSU

MSUMany Michigan State fans were impressed with Javon Ringer right out of the gate. The freshman displayed the kind of moves and speed that Spartans fans haven’t seen from an MSU running back in a long time. Ringer led all Spartans in rushing with 817 yards but Todd Schulz of the Lansing State Journal writes that Ringer was a little disappointed with his production during his freshman year and expects to do much more next season.

Ringer burst through the door at MSU last year, rushing for 194 spectacular yards in a lopsided win against Illinois. He gradually surpassed teammates Jason Teague and Jehuu Caulcrick to become the Spartans’ primary running back. But Ringer, who was rarely recognized on campus last fall, doesn’t consider himself a star yet.

“I should have been able to do better,” he said. “I was playing robotically. Seeing as how we had that three-back rotation and I was just a freshman, I didn’t want to do anything too outrageous where (the coaches) could say ‘Uh, OK, freshman mistake. You’re out.’ I’d see a place where I might be able to cut back. But I didn’t want to take the chance of trying it and it failing and them taking me out.”

That will be tough to do next fall. Though Ringer will share the load with Caulcrick, a junior, and red-shirt freshman A.J. Jimmerson, reaching 1,000 yards is a good bet.
