Three Spartans drafted by NFL teams
The lifelong dreams of three Michigan State players came true over the weekend. Eric Smith was selected in the third round by the New York Jets, Domata Peko was taken by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round, and Chris Morris was taken in the 7th round by the Oakland Raiders. Now all three will battle during training camp to get a final roster spot. Jon Malavolti of the Lansing State Journal reports that Morris wasn’t sure his name would be called on Sunday.
“You start to worry and wonder, but it came through and I’m really excited,” said Morris, who watched the draft with family and friends at home.
Morris, a native of Lambertville, is looking forward to reuniting with former MSU wide receivers coach Jim McElwain, who accepted the job of quarterbacks coach for the Raiders this past offseason.
“I’m sure he had some nice words to say about me, so I’m extremely happy about that,” Morris said. “It’ll be nice to see him again and thank him.”
