Spartans look to Herron for defensive leadership
David Herron Jr. started out with MSU at the now extinct fullback position, and has emerged as a probable NFL draft pick at linebacker. In the process, Herron has become a vocal leader on the Michigan State practice field. The Lansing State Journal reports that MSU’s coaching staff is hoping Herron will continue to show the leadership ability he’s displayed this off season.
“We’re not in elementary anymore, we’re not in Pee-Wee, we’re grown men so if I hurt your feelings, I really don’t care,” said Herron, as he talked to reporters during the Big Ten media gathering. “Some guys have (responded well), some guys have some hostility. But I believe that it works because you shouldn’t be mad just because one guy is getting on you.”
Herron said he has now fully embraced his role as a linebacker and the switch may ultimately help his NFL hopes.
“I watched the (NFL) draft last year and I don’t remember seeing one fullback that got drafted,” Herron Jr. said. “So I think it is a blessing that I did move to linebacker and hopefully I can make the NFL.”
