MSU offensive line jelling

MSUMichigan State’s offensive line is one of the biggest concerns for Spartans fans this fall. Most of the line is being replaced from last season and it appears to be the only potential weak point in MSU’s high powered offense. Steve Grinczel of MLive.com reports that starting center Kyle Cook is confident the line will come together during the season just as other inexperienced MSU lines have in the past.

“Eventually, the five of us are going to jell together as a group just as we have in the past,” said Cook, who as a redshirt freshman in 2003 backed up center Chris Morris. “Yes, going into this year we only have 38 starts among us compared to last year when we had more than 100.

“But look at the year before that. We had myself, Sean Poole and Will Whitticker who never really started, with Stefon Wheeler and Chris Morris as our only two starters, and nobody had any faith in us. And we had a really excellent line that year.”

Cook’s experience gave him the edge over Masters.

While junior John Masters lost the starting center battle against Kyle Cook, he will add invaluable depth to the line according to Tim Kirby of the Lansing State Journal.

MSU junior center John Masters lost out to senior Kyle Cook in the battle for the starting job.

But coach John L. Smith and Cook still view Masters as an important cog to provide depth for the offensive line.

Even though Masters likely will only see time at center, he can fill in and allow Cook to move to guard if needed.
