Scott and Trannon have chance to overtake Rison
Michigan State has never been known for being a passing team until recently. Three yards and a cloud of dust. MSU’s career leader in receptions, Andre Rison, even comes from an era of MSU football most famous for the Spartans’ running game. With that in mind, it’s not difficult to believe that seniors Matt Trannon and Jerramy Scott have a shot to catch Rison in John L. Smith’s wide-open passing offense. The two receivers are the focus of this Todd Schulz story from the Lansing State Journal.
Scott needs just 40 catches this season to top Andre Rison’s record of 146 career receptions. Trannon can break the mark with 43 grabs.
Honestly, it’s hard to picture either name topping a list of stars that includes Rison, Charles Rogers and Plaxico Burress.
We think of Trannon as an underachiever, at least by the lofty expectations that accompanied him to East Lansing. Despite his rare combination of speed, size and strength, he’s displayed only flashes of dominance.
We think of Scott as . . . well, we don’t really think of Scott all that much. It’s easy to take the gritty overachiever for granted. He’s not fast or flashy. He’s just the most frequent, familiar target for quarterback Drew Stanton and MSU’s leading receiver in each of the past two seasons.
