Smith believes this may be his best MSU team yet
The past few preseasons at MSU, John L. Smith seemed somewhat cautious about his team’s chances for success. This preseason, Smith seems a little more confident. Tim Martin reports in the Detroit News that the “charismatic cowboy” believes this may be his best shot yet at success with MSU.
John L. Smith says his fourth Michigan State team might have the best shot at success since he arrived on campus.
A winning season would help his job security.
Following three seasons and an 18-18 record, the Michigan State faithful are looking for bigger and better things from Smith’s program.
As far as Drew Stanton is concerned, a successful season couldn’t come soon enough. Nevermind the Heisman hype and his “rockstar status”, Stanton just wants victories according to this AP story on MLive.com.
Stanton, one of the top QBs in the nation, said stats and personal accolades don’t mean much without wins. He wants to compete for a Big Ten title, make a top flight bowl trip and dramatically improve on his 8-10 career record as a starter.
“You work for four years and you hope you are in a position to do some big things, not only as an individual but as a team,” Stanton said. “That’s what I’m focused on more this year — having a successful season as a team. Individual stats come within this offense. But it’s something that doesn’t necessarily mean anything when you’re losing football games.”
Teammates say Stanton is more focused than ever as the Sept. 2 season opener against Idaho approaches.
