Two feet and Ringer dominate second scrimmage
The good news is that freshman kicker Brett Swenson hit field goals from 50, 42, 36, 35 and 35 yards making him a perfect 10-10 during scrimmages so far. He’ll likely be the starter against Idaho. The bad news is that the already thin depth at cornerback just became thinner. sophomore backup cornerback Ross Weaver suffered a broken ankle and is out for the season. True freshmen Ashton Henderson and Kendell Davis-Clark are now the only depth MSU has at the cornerback position.
Joe Rexrode of the Lansing State Journal reports that overall, the Michigan State offense seemed to dominate this scrimmage.
We do wonder why this report fails to mention how many touchdowns Javon Ringer had throwing the football and how many tackles he had while playing defense.
The offense apparently got the best of the defense in the scrimmage, which was held at Spartan Stadium and closed to the media and public. Running back Javon Ringer starred in a variety of ways - returning the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown; rushing eight times for 51 yards and another touchdown; and chipping in with a blocked punt, which receiver Devin Thomas took in for a touchdown.
Quarterback Drew Stanton passed just eight times, but completed five for 224 yards and two scores - a 47-yarder to Jerramy Scott and 39-yarder to Matt Trannon.
Backup quarterback Brian Hoyer also rolled up big numbers, connecting on 14 of 22 passes for 162 yards, with touchdown passes to Deon Curry (54 yards), A.J. Jimmerson (20) and Thomas (17). Hoyer ran two series with the first team.
