JLS decides against two kickers, Swenson the starter

MSUMore good news coming out of Michigan State’s fall camp concerning the kickers. Freshman Brent Swenson has put some distance between himself and Todd Boleski. Head coach John L. Smith contemplated having a two-kicker system where Boleski would handle the longer field goal attempts but had decided to just stick with Swenson. Tim Kirby of the Lansing State Journal writes that JLS is starting to feel good about the kicking situation for the first time in quite a while.

“If there was a game tomorrow, he’d kick,” Smith said of Swenson. “I don’t anticipate that changing but I do anticipate Boleski kicking off.”

Boleski will handle kickoff duty along with long field goal attempts, likely from 55-60 yards out, if needed.

“I feel good about (Swenson); better than I’ve felt in a long time,” Smith said. “Kickers have to have thick skin and let the criticism, or the misses even, and not let it worry you and he seems to be that kind of kid.”
