Weis’s boast motivates Spartans against Irish

Charlie WeisIrish fans won’t quit talking about how offensive the “flag planting” was. Following MSU’s 44-41 victory last season, several Spartans players planted a Block S flag into the turf of Notre Dame Stadium. Nevermind that the Irish forgot to bring the Megaphone Trophy to the game. Nevermind that the Irish planted their own flag in Spartan Stadium just one year prior (see second story below.)

MSU now has a little bulletin board material of its own. During a Notre Dame alumni function over the summer, Weis reportedly promised that the Irish would never lose to the Spartans again under his watch. That comment made it onto a popular Notre Dame message board, then onto our Red Cedar Message Board. From there it became some fun bulletin board fodder for the MSU staff. Dave Dye of the Detroit News reports that Drew Stanton was amused by the boast.

“Coach Weiss is as competitive as any coach out there,” Stanton said. “He’s proven himself with the offenses he’s been able to conduct.

“But that’s a pretty bold statement to make that you’re never going to lose to a team that’s beaten you seven of the last nine times. We’ll see what happens. That’s why you line up and play it. But he’s not even playing in the game. For him to say he’ll never lose is a pretty bold statement.”

As far as the egregious flag planting, this is what Drew Stanton had to say about it in the Detroit Free Press following last seasons game.

“I guess nobody knew that they did it to us last year,” Stanton said. “Nobody made as big of a deal out of it, I think, just because we’re Michigan State and they’re Notre Dame and nobody’s supposed to do that to Touchdown Jesus and the Golden Dome and stuff like that.

“So they took it personal, but they were saying that they conquered Michigan last year by beating Michigan and Michigan State. It’s all in good fun, I think for the most part.”
