Williams stepping up in MSU secondary

Williams Demond Williams is used to all of the criticism the MSU secondary has received. He and his teammates have heard it all.

He’s also used to being challenged by opposing coaches. During the Pitt game, the Panthers threw the ball in his direction several times. Neil Koepke of the Lansing State Journal writes that Williams didn’t have a perfect game but certainly held his own.

He made five tackles and had a key interception on a long pass at the MSU 2-yard-line in the final seconds of the first half and MSU went on to a 38-23 victory.

“They threw to his area early and he reacted to the quick throws and made some nice open-field tackles,” MSU secondary coach Chuck Driesbach said. “They wanted to throw it downfield and he had great position to make an interception.

“Demond is mentally tough. He never loses confidence in himself and I’ve never lost confidence in him. But I do make it tough for him in practice because we know how rough it’ll be on Saturday if he’s not doing the right things.”
