MSU’s best game of the season beats UM in GLI final

Michigan State defeated Michigan 4-1 in the Great Lakes Invitational final on Saturday in what coach Rick Comley called MSU’s best game of the year.  The Spartans’ special teams were on fire with three power play goals and a shorthanded goal.

Neil Koepke of the Lansing State Journal reports that Comley was extremely pleased with the win over the Wolverines.

“From start to finish, this was our best game,” Comley said.

The Spartans (11-7-1 overall, 7-5-1 CCHA) scored three power-play for the second straight night and also added a short-handed goal as they extended their winning streak to four games.

“We played really well. If you would have seen us the day we came back from break. … I never would have dreamed in a million years that we could pull it together like this quickly and play this well.

“From the beginning we were solid. Jeff Lerg was solid (in goal) again and scoring first is always big. We created pressure at their end of the ice and we had solid games from an awful lot of people.”
