Suton leads Spartans with 27 points

Goran Suton and MSU’s bigs lead the Spartans to a 74-61 win over Loyola on Saturday afternoon.  The win sets a Michigan State record with 13 wins during the non-conference schedule.

In the Lansing State Journal, Drew Neitzel credits MSU’s post players for the win after Loyola designed their defense to take him out of the game.

Suton led all scorers with a career-high 27, eclipsing his previous best by nine. Gray had 16 points in just 12 minutes in the first half - topping his career scoring high of 15 - and finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

“That was huge for our team,” said Neitzel, who had 10 points after a recent flurry of 20-point games, but matched his career mark with 12 assists. “It just shows another way we can win. We can win on the shoulders of our big guys.”

Loyola (5-6), coached by former Maryland assistant Jimmy Patsos, employed a box-and-one zone to try to contain Neitzel. He ended up taking just nine shots, hitting three.
