The new home for MSU football, how about a statue too?

MSU head coaches as far back as Nick Saban have been begging for a renovation to the Duffy Daugherty Football Building. Mark Dantonio will apparently be the beneficiary of those dreams. To kick off the project, MSU received a $5 million contribution over the summer from alums Robert and Julie Skandalaris. It’s the largest gift the athletic department has ever received.

Early drawings of the renovations are making their way online. Our initial thoughts as we look at the circular brick courtyard is that it will only be a matter of time before they build a statue in the center of it. It would be a perfect location for one dedicated to the football program. Biggie or Duffy maybe? There just doesn’t seem to be an MSU football player that stands out from the crowd like Magic does for basketball. After looking around on the web, we really like what NC State has done with their new statue outside of their football stadium. How amazing would it be to have a few ancient Greek hoplite soldiers guarding the entrance to the Duffy in full armor? Classy yet strong at the same time. It would be a reminder of Sparta’s strength and courage to coaches, players, and fans as the enter the building each day.

(Hint to the powers that be: go see the movie “300″ when it comes out in March, it may be the closest MSU sports will ever get to having a “Rudy”-like movie, please capitalize on it)

The first mockups of the renovation are being discussed on our Red Cedar Message Board.
