Mike Garland returns to MSU to rejoin Izzo’s staff

Mike GarlandFormer Cleveland State head coach Mike Garland is returning to MSU to fill the vacancy on Tom Izzo’s staff. He was an assistant coach last season at SMU for Matt Doherty.

Garland served as an assistant coach at MSU for seven years where he helped recruit several top ten recruiting classes.

Garland replaces Jim Boylen who left after this past season for the head coaching job at Utah.  Shannon Shelton of the Detroit Free Press reports that this was a very easy decision for Tom Izzo.

Garland served as an assistant on Izzo’s staff for seven seasons before taking the head-coaching position at Cleveland State from 2003-06. Garland was most recently an assistant under Matt Doherty at Southern Methodist.

“It wasn’t a tough decision,” said Izzo, who played basketball with Garland at Northern Michigan. “He’s been my guy for 25 years, so why change now?”
