A First Down suggestion for MSU students ‘1, 2, 3…Pound Green, Pound!’
Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not one to discourage Michigan State’s student section from coming up with unique cheers. It seems like there have been far too few uniquely MSU cheers over the years ever since my parents chanted “Kill Bubba, Kill” from the student section in the 1960’s. I’m all for our student section being extremely vocal and original.
However, you’ve probably heard alums complaining about the “1, 2, 3…FDB” cheer on message boards and on local sports talk radio. Unlike other alums, I’m not really offended by it. I just don’t find it all that original or interesting. I heard that it originated back while the Chappelle Show was still on the air but that’s just one theory. I honestly don’t think students need to get rid of it though, I just think they can do better. How about this instead?
“1, 2, 3…Pound Green, Pound!”
Pound Green, Pound? What the heck? Apparently MSU head coach Mark Dantonio has recently said that “Pound Green, Pound” is a new motto that the team has used this season as motivation. I don’t know all the details of it but I assume it has to do with our new attacking defense, and punishing ground game on offense. If it does truly motivate the team, that cheer can only be a good thing right? The Spartan Marching Band won’t need to change their in-game routine to discourage it, and Coach Dantonio won’t have to make an embarrassing public service video condemning it. It would also be unique to MSU as Purdue students also reportedly use the “1,2,3…FDB” cheer.
Anyways, that’s my two-cents on the whole thing as an old fuddy-duddy alum in his early 30’s. I just figure, why not turn it into something positive and unique to MSU? ![]()
