Valenti asked what kind of ranking the SpartanMag guys what his star ranking should be. Paul K said he is at least a 3-star. The kid is 6'4", 315 lbs and has a great motor.

He was listed as one of the top OL recruits in the state of Michigan during his junior year.

OL recruiting is impossible to predict.

For once I agree with you. for example, and not to knock him, Roland Martin was one of the highest rated lineman in the country. due to injuries and position changes he hasn't shown his best yet. anyone can have size, its a matter of how they use it against top competition. most large talented lineman just don't have to try that hard in high school

My opinion. The coaches saw him at camp, liked what they saw, probably liked what they had seen and heard from him before, and made an offer. I doubt they're consulting star rankings before every offer.

That's why they suck as coaches and recruiters.

Sincerely,

Well lets face it we lost Ray unexpectedly, Dumphord pussed out, and JLS did not leave much depth. MSU is going to need to take chances they need many Olineman.

What is Charles Rogers doing today, working at a coney island in Detroit? This kid should have said, 'I always wanted to be like Muhsin Muhammad'.

I don't see this kid as "taking a chance". Before his HS closed down, he was a higher-ranked prospect. How that didn't effect Nick Perry, I don't know.

I have a hunch about this kid. I don't know what it is, but I have a good feeling about him.

I generally don’t appreciate how hard Oz comes after some people on here, but this time he's definitely in the right. People who bash 17-18 year old kid (especially ones who choose to attend MSU) based on stupid star rankings are ****** Turds and deserve to be mowed down.

Chuck Rogers was a helluva player at MSU, nothing wrong with him being a kid's favorite MSU player.

I'm sure your heroes at that age were perfect individuals...

It is hard to measure the intangibles such as work ethic, brains, character, heart, leadership, toughness etc. All needed in a good OL.

I agree I like the pick-up. He is a PSL kid and MD is paving the way for MSU. I really get a kick out of The Fort making fun of this kid when we just kicked their ass for Smith, another PSL kid.

I think Woods will and should be given a look at Defensive Tackle before branding him an offensive lineman. Being versatile at his age probably helped him land the scholarship. Many guys start out at DL and then move to OL. Patrick Rigan I think is going to soon be an offensive player, be it TE or OL. He was recruited as a DE by JLS but Dantonio has moved him to DT. At 250lbs he has to put on at least 30 more pounds to have shot at DT. I see him moving to TE like he played in HS and that other schools recruited him for that spot.

Totally unrelated and most of you are too young to know about this but, every time I see a post about Nick Perry I think about this guy.

Quote:
Nick Perry, a Pittsburgh broadcasting pioneer who became a household favorite as host of "Bowling for Dollars" but fell from grace when he was linked to the rigged "666" Daily Lottery scheme, died Tuesday. His death came two days before the 23rd anniversary of the fateful drawing.

Soon after the Daily Number came up 666 on that spring evening, rumors about a fix began to surface. Many of them came from illegal bookmakers, who took bets on the lottery and had to pay off.

The Daily Number is drawn from three machines in which numbered ping-pong balls are randomly distributed by a column of air. One ball in each machine pops to the top when a trap door is opened and the three numbers, read consecutively, form the winning number.

In the so-called 666 fix, every ball except those numbered four or six was injected with white latex paint so it would not rise high enough to be drawn. The idea was to wager on every combination containing fours and sixes.

A grand jury called Mr. Perry the mastermind behind the plan, and a jury in Harrisburg convicted him in 1981 of criminal conspiracy, criminal mischief, theft by deception, rigging a publicly exhibited contest and perjury.

This staff doesn't take offensive linemen just to take them. Think of the linemen Smith got verbals from that they reevaluated. If they think he's worth taking, and other people had him rated as the third best prospect in Michigan prior to last year, he's probably a pretty good get. It actually takes a lot of balls to take someone you like even though he doesn't have the stars. Like the fact that this staff has those sorts of balls. It's sort of the anti-Lions (of former years) approach. Look at all the highly rated wide receivers the Lions signed that didn't pan out. Marinelli changes a DB to WR and he succeeds wildly. Why? Because Martz had seen him first-hand and knew he was worth something.

Arthur Ray Jr. was a fairly high ranked OL from the 2007 class who was diagnosed with cancer recently. His surgery was (apparently) successful, and he may play football one day at MSU according to Dantonio at the media day IIRC.

Did Perry end up at a school with a better team? Did he have better talent around him to make him look good? How did Anthony's Jr. season go? Who knows maybe the gurus just screwed this one up.

Well, I believe they both played this past season at Mackenzie. It closed and Perry has gone to MLK while Woods is headed to Melvindale. I don't think either has played a game at a school other than Mackenzie yet.

Ah so! Wasn't sure when McKenzie closed. My gut says Woods has a big senior year and proves Dantonio/Enos right.

Do you know what his Jr year was like? The rankings were pre sesason I believe.
