His top three schools from the beginning were ND, Florida and Michigan.
All three of those schools didn't show him the love early on and passed on him. Michigan with McGuffie, ND went after two other 4 star running backs and then Florida is chasing after Darrell Scott.
Michigan offered him as an athlete which he didn't like. Notre Dame finally offered and it is a legit running back offer.
If they would have offered a long time ago he would have been Irish on the spot I imagine.

Considering what he's said in the past, I'd say we have a great chance at landing Jonas now.
Hey AA, would you rather have Gray or Caper? Caper's from my old stomping grounds -- good to see another D-I prospect from the Creek.

I would rather have Caper. I think he is going to be a better college player than Jonas.

ND was a favorite of his as a junior, but when he started getting into recruiting they didn't appear again. Michigan never really hit his radar too much.

I don't know...bird in the hard and all. I think one reason I'd "take" Caper would be to spread out the classes more.

That is true but I laid out the reasoning I thought.
I guess I should say he wanted his Michigan offer, which he got as an athlete.
Notre Dame didn't appear again because they didn't show him the love early on.
ND went hard after Ryan Williams, but things are looking like he is going to be a Hokie shortly.
They also wanted Carlton Thomas a lot and he committed to Georgia.
They missed out on both of those guys and now they are after Jonas pretty hard.

Yeah. I just don't buy a lot of that. I mean, you don't drop them because they are recruiting other players. If they're your favorite, you at least keep listing them while you're entertaining other offers. Lots of kids will have a list of like 6 favorites and then pick one. For him to rule ND out so soon in the process and not even be mentioning them (because they weren't recruiting him hard??) and then for them to be a favorite again seems pretty bizarre to me. That alone should be enough for him to say "**** Notre Dame".

Not to mention the fact that they're one of the worst D-I programs in America right now.

But they can offer PT..even though they suck donkey balls. He can go play for the worst ND program in history.

OK, how in the heck can they offer playing time?
Seriously? Playing time?
Robert Hughes, true freshman, 5-star.
Armando Allen, true freshman, 4-star
James Aldridge, redshirt freshman, 5-star
That's three guys who are each rated as highly or higher than Jonas Gray is right now, and each within a year or two ahead of him. Now, I realize ND has no running game to speak of, but does anybody seriously believe it's because of the running back talent?
Uh, no.
Their offensive line play is, well, offensive. And because of it, they've got two QBs running the "Please don't hurt me," version of Weis' playbook. Not being able to pass for a darn means teams can and do stack the box with defenders and dare ND to run it with a line that can't run block either.
So, to me, if I'm Jonas Gray, I'm seriously wondering, "Will I be able to change all that all by myself?"
If this kid can't find his way to the school that's up and coming, and has a run-based offense that has put huge numbers on every team but Ohio State this season, then maybe State doesn't really need him afterall.
Maybe he'd have just as hard of time finding holes big enough to drive a semi through. Good Lord. Some kids just baffle me with their school choices.
First Nebraska ... and now ND? Are you kidding me?

Probably because those three aren't doing anything right now. So Jabba can tell him that when he comes in next year he'd have an equal shot at starting...or something.

Nebraska and ND are the two most delusional, dysfunctional "power" programs in the country right now.
I'd say that even if we weren't on Jonas' radar.

you're absolutely right, it's baffling. FWIW I'll bet now that Jonas has officially de-committed Dantonio will go back after him and probably wind up with him. ND's just in shambles, multiple blue chippers are bailing and I doubt Weis is still there after next season. Look for him at the Michigan game comming up.

Don't get me wrong. Getting a stub RB like Gray would be sweet, but this team has a huge problem with LB depth with SirD and Thornhill leaving at the end of the season and not much available after Jones and Gordon (I suspect Misch will be moved to safety). Not to mention with our run first O we need more on the O-Line.
I guess what I am saying is that if we get Gray but don't get more LBs and O-Linemen, we are worse off.

I know what you are saying about the need at ol, and lb. but in the class of 08 we already have three commits, so i dont know how many more we would take. two if we can get them i would guess (hopefully stephens). as far as moving misch to safety, do you thing this because of his size, or for depth, because i think if the coaches want him too then he can put on weight, and as far as depth, we have 3 db commits for 08 already and the s from georgia traywick really liked his visit, so heres to hoping... so i dont think taking gray would really kill us on the scholarships. a kid that talented and the number one recruit in the state, i think that we have to go after him especially considering our offense.

Free update on Ingram over on Scout:
Scout.com: Let the Trips Begin
Quote:
Let the Trips Begin
| Allen Wallace
SuperPrep.com | Oct 22, 2007 |
Mark Ingram, whose season is now over, doesn't have any official visits scheduled yet, but plans to set some soon. "I'm going to start setting them up now," Ingram said. "I didn't want to take any during the season. I'd like to take as many visits as I can. I want to be sure I'm comfortable wherever I go. I just want to see how I feel at each school..."
Mark Ingram, the 5-foot-10, 202-pound three-star running back from Southwestern Academy in Flint, Mich., finished his senior season with 1700 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 33 tackles and two interceptions. Southwestern Academy didn't make the playoffs after finishing the season with a 4-5 record. They would have been 7-2, however they had to forfeit three games due to an ineligible player. Ingram has approximately 19 scholarship offers and now favors Michigan State slightly over Iowa, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Washington and South Florida.
"I like that Michigan State is only about 45 minutes away," Ingram said. "I have a great relationship with the coaches. They are all very personable and down-to-earth."
Although it wasn't an official visit, Ingram attended Michigan State's 17-13 victory over Pittsburgh. "They are turning it around," he said. "They are doing a little better this year and I think they'll get there.
"I really like how much fun they have during the game day. It's a really exciting atmosphere."
Ingram doesn't have any official visits scheduled yet, but plans set some soon. "I'm going to start setting them up now," he said. "I didn't want to take any during the season. I'd like to take as many visits as I can. I want to be sure I'm comfortable wherever I go. I just want to see how I feel at each school."
He says that school that is recruiting him the hardest is Iowa. "I really like the offense they run," he said. "They run the I-pro and I think I'd fit in well there. They also have great coaches who have been there a while. I know a few players there already and they have a lot of good things to say about them."
Ingram grew up following Florida, but the Gators never offered and aren't really recruiting him. He does have an offer from South Florida, a team Ingram admitted to not knowing anything about. "When they offered me, I didn't know who they were," he said. "They've been doing really good this year and have probably impressed me the most."
Another school that Ingram hopes to learn more about is Washington. "I think I'd have a great opportunity to play early there," he said. "They need playmakers and I really like coach Tyrone Willingham. He's got a great resume and is a well-respected coach."
Ingram also played cornerback in high school, but everyone is recruiting him on offense. "I like playing running back," he said. "I'm a playmaker and like having the ball in my hands."
He reports a 3.0 core GPA and an 18 ACT.

This just goes to show how difficult it is to recruit in this area. The wheels are falling off in South Bend and Jabba lands Floyd this weekend and looks like they have a legitimate shot at Gray. I could understand if Gray went to scUM, I would of hated it, but I would have understood as it isn't like their program is falling apart. You have to wonder what is the motivation to go play for Weis. The guy is an arrogant *****, and it seems his players really dislike him.

Those are all good points ... however, I say go after and get both o-line and LB help and also try to reel in Gray and Ingraham.
Get as many studs as you can, wherever you can.
