Any word on Carter? I thought after reading some stuff he would give Dantonio the nod today/tomorrow.

If anyone expects some IMMEDIATE info/commits, they need to chill out and wait. The kids are traveling back home today, so give them some time to actually think about all that went on.

If MSU doesn't get any commits right away, I expect people on here to freak out.

Have some backbone! If no other schools were after our top recruits, what type of recruits would they be? We cannot find 25 sleepers out there that no one knows of or wants.

Lets call it flattery and show these guys why they want to be Spartans!!

Bad news, Texas just offered ATH DJ Grant from Texas that we were in on. He was supposed to visit last weekend but couldnt make it and should be here this weekend still. Dantonio and Iowa State were the first to offer this Texas sleeper but since his senior year film has come out his stock has skyrocketed and he has gotten offers from Oklahoma, Ok St, and now Texas to name a few. The Texas offer is HUGE IMO because it will be a big battle to convince a texas kid to pick MSU over Texas. The best thing we can do is offer early PT.

This guy could be a big WR or a ball hawking safety. Heres an early pre-season write up on him:

13. Derrick Grant, DB, Austin LBJ
Grant had an outstanding sophomore season as he was a first team all-District defensive end but an injury shortened his junior season. He is now back and is making on both sides of the ball as a linebacker and receiver. He has good speed for an edge pass rusher in high school, but right now he looks like a project safety built in the Sean Taylor mold. Grant is reporting offers from Iowa State and Rice.

I bolded the part I liked

I dont know recruiting well enough but I would hope us recognizing his talent and offering early means something.

Of course it will also come down to how well he gets along with the coaching staff and the players he meets. Early PT is big too.

when the team offering is Texas and you're from Texas? It doesn't mean much. Most kids first offers are MAC schools, should they be loyal to their first offer and the first to recognize their talent? Hardly

We need to impress the hell out of Stevens this weekend. He apparently had a very good visit to Oregon last weekend.

The Delta Gamma's still known as the "Easy DG's"?

If so, Bring him to them!

Don't we just have to tell these kids that our coach would be the SCum coach if SCum started its search last season? It's like having the SCum coach, but not having to go to SCum. Sounds like a good tactic to me.

So why would we want him to enroll early? wouldn't that cut off a year of eligibility?

Maybe they consider him a redshirt.

We do this with recruits almost every single year. Backdating is nothing new. As far as I know it has nothing to do with eligibility.

The kid will still be in the 2008 class eligibilty wise. This way he gets to go through spring practice with the team here in EL. So now MSU can get one more player for its 2008 class if they choose to.

I would be shocked if he doesn't commit to a West coast team (e.g. Arizona State, Oregon.) Just getting a visit would be a plus.

Any PT, too. We're salivating over Ingram but that could mean four years of watching football from the sidelines for our other RBs. Nichols backing up a redshirt freshman in Oklahoma. 4* Carl Grimes, etc., etc. The better the recruiting at a school, the more likely a guy could spend four years as a talented back up. A selling point for MAC schools is that players will more likely see the field there than here. A selling point for us is, in general, a good recruit is more likely to see the field here than at Texas.

I love it when people go to the "EA Sports" recruiting angle. Lets see... my choices at recruiting angle are: Location, Prestige, Playing Time, Playing Style. Hmmm which one should I use.

Its much more complicated than that. Its about taking your visit, feeling comfortable with other coaches, players, and how you envision your overall college experience. MSU has a lot to offer, and I see no reason why a recruit wouldnt say "I just liked MSU better." I am not saying that we are better than Texas or that Texas is not a great place. I like Austin, I have been there several times, but the place as much fun as it is is not my style. To say that "The only thing a school can offer is playing time" is simplifying the process and also selling MSU short IMO.

Recruits from this past weekend are starting to comment on their trips.
(Morgan Carter, Dwayne Beckford, and Darius Darks) Seems from the titles that we made good impressions on all of them.

right, i just feel a kid from Texas would have a hard time saying no to Texas and picking MSU. State is a long way from home and quite a bit different weather. I hope when all said and done hes ours, but I just think a Texas offer is going to be hard to beat. Hopefully your right and he really enjoys our players and coaches.

Is it just me or does Beckford look like a nasty hitting Strong Safety?

Here is how I see these guys if they all come to MSU.

Beckford: SS
Darks: OLB
Carter: FS

Darks is 6 1 175 lbs, I don't see him being an OLB
Carter at his combines ran a 4.7-4.8. (I hope he was injured) Not very rangy for a FS
Beckford, I can see him at SS but I have a feeling the staff wants him for LB as that is a huge need right now.

More like:

Beckford: Mike (maybe, a LB definitely)
Darks:S
Carter: OLB

And before you guys start whining about 40 times, Carter has also been timed at 4.4. So he is probably somewhere inbetween. 4.5 range.

I agree with the people who think Beckford will be an OLB, he's already pretty ripped dude.
