There's a lot to be said for experience and knowledge, and I don't think he'll give up the job to Perry very easily. I think Perry will be awesome, but if he comes here and starts within the first half of the season (barring injuries), then we really have something special on our hands. It's not like Greg Jones who came into an extremely thin position. We've got some decent guys lining up at DE next year.

Definitely not true. Just because a team runs the spread doesn't mean the scout team runs the spread all the time. Sure he'll be exposed more to the spread, but the defense won't prepare for an offensive system that they'll only see a couple times a year.

How is the defense supposed to prepare for an offensive system that the offense isnt running?

Are you serious? It's called a scout team, every team uses one. This BS about not practicing against a power run offense is ridiculous.

I wonder how we're going to practice for playing BC since we don't have BC to scrimmage against before the bowl game.

For crying out loud, will you people stop saying stuff like that? How often do you think they go first on first? Rarely, very rarely......

This isn't high school. They have a 100 kids practicing. I am sure they can run some straight up offense at their first team defense now and then......

You are 100% correct. They can run a standard offense at their defense. With their backups! And then when the backups are not running "traditional" schemes at their defense, they have to learn how to block for the offense that they play in (in UMs case, the read option). Having two different blocking schemes to learn and use based on if you are scout team or thrown into game action leads to things being less instinctual and mistakes being made.

Go by history, the majority of read option teams struggle vs. a straight up power running attack.

If you don't think playing against a spread in practice every day softens up a defense rather than playing a power rushing team, you are

I think that when you do game prep, you aren't playing against YOUR system.

No wonder why JLS employed the bandit, to practice against his gimmick offense.

Couple things:

Anderson will start from day one at DE and Long will probably be competing with others like Ish Johnson, Jordan (if he doesnt switch to TE) and maybe even Pickleman. The staff has been raving about Pickelman but I think he is still probably a year away. D-line is definitely a strength on this team. It's amazing b/c it was considered such a weakness until Dino arrived.

From what I've heard on here, it seems like Perry would be the immediate starter, opposite Trevor Anderson.

If we get Smith, would he likely start too, or are we thinking MJ?

Smith is no backup plan. MSU will take another 2 DE's in this class. Some combination of Smith, Perry, Youbooty(sp?, not even close). Smith will be a LB unless he bulks up more and the staff has told him this. All of this was from Smith's article from SM.

One article said that Jordan would most likely remain on the DL.

They're giving him reps at TE, it is a possibility. I personally think he will stay on the DL but it depends on how the TE situation is in the spring. If we're light there I could see him switch.

You have to go ones on ones and tackle to the ground from time to time during the season or your team will get soft and fade at the end. I'm by no means implying that this is necessary everyday or every week, but you ought to do it from time to time to keep a team tough, focused, and physical. A 1st team defenses needs to practice against the speed and talent of the 1st team offense or it may not improve during the course of the season. If all your 1st team offense can throw at your defense is the spread then the defense's physicality will suffer.

Dantonio has commented on this when talking about why he runs a multiple offense.

Lo White jr.

Lo White jr. commits to CMU per poster on Rivals. I would have liked us to get him but I do not see the room. MSU is getting great talent and I do not see a spot for him. Best of luck to Lo White jr.

Actually, I believe CMU Scout did an article about it. Looks like the staff isn't going to take anymore DBs (maybe Lipscomb, but thats a big maybe), guess he didn't take the schollie when it was available.

I was hoping, for sentimental value, that we'd sign him.

Not to knock Lo White Sr., but I believe that Jr. was a plan B recruit. He might have accepted the offer but we got some plan A recruits and that took his opportunity away. I wish him the best at CMU, but we will not make it to the next level if we take legacy recruits when better athletes want to become .

Free article:

Nicholas Perry, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound four-star defensive end from King High School in Detroit, Mich., helped lead his team to a perfect 14-0 record and the Div. II state championship. Perry finished his season with 147 tackles and a staggering 36 sacks, which is a state record.

Perry says is not close to making a decision from among over 10 scholarship offers. "I still need to take the rest of my visits," Perry said. "I won't be making a decision until Signing Day. I want to be able to compare all the schools and see how comfortable I am at each one. I'd love a chance to be able to show off my skills early."

The only official visit that Perry has taken thus far was to Michigan State on Dec. 8. "It was good," he said. "They treated me nice and really set the tone for all my other trips. I'll be comparing the others to Michigan State.

"I liked how they practiced and how hard they work," he said. "They have really great facilities too."

The Spartans are only about one hour from his house and he says they've been recruiting him the hardest. "I like that they've been really aggressive with me and tried hard to get me to come on a visit," he said. "They told me that I'd be able to play a big role for them if I was to go there. Also, I like what coach Mark Dantonio has done there. He really stepped up and I think they'll be even better next year."

While Perry says he's still "open", he admits that Michigan State leads slightly over Michigan, West Virginia, USC, Miami, Purdue and Notre Dame. All have offered.

"Michigan is only like 45 minutes away," he said. "It's something to think about, but not a big factor. Growing up, I liked Michigan a lot, but the last few years I've been watching USC and Florida more because they've been winning so much and on TV a lot."

Perry finds himself in an intriguing situation as he has both Michigan, who just hired new head coach Rich Rodriguez and West Virginia, the school coach Rodriguez left for Michigan, in his top five. "I think coach Rodriguez is a great hire for Michigan," he said. "He's a great coach and I really wasn't looking at Michigan too much earlier. Now with coach Rodriguez there I'm definitely interested.

"He's a good coach and has always succeeded wherever he's been," he said. "He's the type of coach that I feel I could play for."

But on the flip side…"I feel bad for West Virginia," he stated. "They lost a great coach. I just hope someone can step up and is able to take his place. I'm gonna wait and see what happens. It hurt them a little, but I'm not gonna rule them out yet."

Perry says he's talked with coaches at West Virginia and Miami about taking an official visit in January and hopes to also visit USC next month. "It's USC," Perry says of his interest in the Trojans. "They have a great program and they always have players going to the NFL. That's what really appeals to me. I want to go where they can help get me in the league.

"(Asst.) Coach (Brennan) Carroll is a cool guy and says they are looking for someone who can come in and contribute right away," he said. "He told me I could be another NFL guy for them."

Although Perry says he has offers from both Purdue and Notre Dame, he admits they haven't been showing him a lot of interest lately. "They really aren't recruiting me like the others are," he said. "They haven't been on me too much."

Perry, ranked as the No. 7 defensive end in the country by Scout.com, says he can bench 350 pounds and squat 450. He has a 32-inch vertical jump and claims to run a 4.5 forty. "I have great hands and quickness," he said. "I move good and can change directions fast. I move really well sideline-to-sideline, but I want to be more physical and be able to overpower guys easier."

He reports a 3.0 core GPA and a 16 ACT. Perry plans to take the SAT on Jan. 26.
