Are we going after Ed Tinker still pretty hard?

Tinker - Scout

From scout today: (free content)

-----------------------

Ed Tinker, the 6-foot-1, 188-pound three-star wide receiver from Brashear High School in Pittsburgh, Pa., helped lead his team to a perfect 12-0 season and the quad A city championship.

Tinker finished his senior year with 28 receptions over 450 yards and nine touchdowns.

Tinker now favors Colorado, which has been in the lead since early September, solidly over Louisville, West Virginia and Michigan State. All of his favorites have offered.

He says there's an "80 percent" chance he'll choose the Buffs, although he doesn't plan to make his final decision until after taking all of his visits. "I'm gonna go through the rest of the recruiting process," Tinker said. "I want to take the rest of my visits and see how it goes."

Tinker already officially visited Colorado on Sept. 15 and says the Buffs are recruiting him the hardest. "They said they're going to come to one of my basketball games during Christmas break," he said. "I like Colorado because they play a really tough schedule and always hang in tough. They played a lot of top teams this year and made it to a bowl game, which I don't think many people thought they would do. It's a great program and I think they'll be getting even better."

The only other official visit that Tinker has already set up is to Michigan State on Jan. 11. "They have a pretty good team that is still improving," he said. "I also really like the coaches and they always have good quarterbacks and I like their offense."

Tinker plans to visit Louisville and West Virginia in January as well. "I was supposed to visit Louisville this month but had to reschedule," he said. "I'll definitely still visit them. I really like the offense and how explosive it is."

With the recent news of coach Rich Rodriguez leaving West Virginia for Michigan, Tinker admits there's a bit more uncertainty surrounding his Mountaineer visit. "I was really surprised that coach Rodriguez decided to take the Michigan job," he said.

"I really didn't think he'd leave because I remember reading how much he loved West Virginia, so it took me by surprise," Tinker said. "But I don't think it'll affect the program too much. I don't think they'll be making any major changes and hopefully they hire a good coach that can just continue what coach Rodriguez started. They still have a lot of talent and are recruiting really well. I think they'll turn out a good team next year."

Tinker says that his comfort level is going to be the most important factor in his decision. "The distance and location don't matter as long as I'm comfortable," he said. "Even my mother said that I can go anywhere, which is surprising because mother's usually want their sons to stay close to home. She said she'll come see me wherever I go."

The final obstacle for Tinker is making sure he qualifies. He has a 2.4 core GPA, but says this winter semester he earned a 2.8. He scored a 740 SAT and is retaking the test on Jan. 26. "I'm taking SAT prep classes because I really need to get my score up," he said. "I know I need to get around a 910 (SAT) to qualify."

By yesterday do you mean the 19th, since its after midnight?? I'm just curious because we were waiting around at 1 trying to see if there was a commitment and I was wondering if after that was when they found out he couldn't come here. Also why would the staff waste so much time and energy recruiting this kid if just now they just realize that he won't get past our admissions standards??? Shouldn't they look into that earlier?

Yes. I meant the 19th since it was after midnight

I think that they were trying to find a way to get him in.

What's up with scUM's TE committs?

It seems with the new offense, scUM'ss TE commits have to be looking around.

Anyone heard any updates on the #6 TE from Ohio, Kevin Koger? He would look unbelievable in Green and White!

Eh, that guy loves UM. I live half mile from his high school and it's unbelievable how much they brag about him being a Wolvie. His #2 was OSU anyway. No way MSU gets in there.

Well TE is certainly going to be a major hole to fill...Not a good sign when we are experimenting with DT's. Any other JUCO's out there that we are looking at ?

If you're talking about Jordan, I thought he was a DE. Also, have you seen the guy's wingspan? If he can catch, goaline plays got a little easier

We havea young 4 star reccruit at TE, Charlie Gantt who will be a redshirt sophmore next season. Whats the word on him? Does he not fit in with what wants to do? I mean I am sure he is no KD, but we are probably not going to find another one like him anytime soon anyway. We also have two to be redshirt freshmen in Celek and Duran. Seems like if we brought in another freshmen or 2 we would be just fine unless None of the three listed are panning out and its hard to say that until you throw them out their and let them play. I'd kind of like to see us role with the young guys i guess.

The fact that we were looking for a JUCO TE to come in right away and produce indicates the staff may not be all that pleased about the devolpement of the youngsters. Agree with throwing in the young guys...no better way to learn

Gantt may have been a four-star rated recruit, but if the coaching staff is experimenting with using Michael Jordan at TE, and have also decided to move Pat Rigan to TE permanently I would say that Gantt is not the type of TE that Dantonio envisions. I haven't read anything either positive or negative regarding Gantt's development, nor do I hear his name mentioned as being a standout on the practice squad as I have Legget, Pickelman, and Foreman.

I don't believe the staff has given up on Celek and Duran. Going after Graham may have been more of a experience/development issue, as Celeck and Duran are both true freshmen this year. Celek supposedly was the best TE at the 2006 OSU camp according to Jim Tressel, but the Buckeyes weren't interested in taking a TE.
