|
Agree. You take JUCO's to fill gaps in your personnel. I would prefer all freshman, let them develop etc., but a coaching staff doesn't always have that luxury. We have a gap at TE and linebacker, because we missed out on recruiting players in past years.

I think your post proves how many JUCO's have contributed. Would you like to go through how many true freshman have never contributed in the last five years. It has to be twice or three times as many as the JUCO's you have listed.
|
Moss was also not a JUCO guy. He was prep school.

Winston is listed on Rivals as an athlete. What position is he projected at?
|
Is Winston more or less a done-deal? Not sure what his other offers are, but according to Rivals "in the running" thing, only MAC schools have offered him besides us.
-Picking up commits from him and/or Balogun this weekend would be nice.

I thought we were Smith's leader? During his visit we were really working him hard. Hoover and Coach D were making him look like some kind of a beauty queen with the way they were in his ear at the bball game.

Good post. I don't necessarily agree that convincing the odd elite junior to stay is the key to getting an elite program but I can see what you are saying and yes it would help a LOT if we can get guys like DT to stay.
Who are these potential stars that could go pro after next year?
Anderson? He's the only one I can think of who will be good enough to even consider it, even though we have no idea just how good he is.

First of all, you're misinterpreting the meaning of what he said. Second, I don't think MSU needs to adopt anything that Bo and Michigan use as a current slogan.
Or hell, let's adopt UM's slogan and then throw a sign up that says "Play Like Champions Today" on the wall so our players can touch it before they hit the field, since were not really interested in creating our own history.

I Never said they did NOT contribute - I was instead challenging all the great JUCO's people posted about. The people like Tinney and Jackson made the class look good on signing day but by the time the first game rolled around, it looked a lot more of a bust.
People right now are holding Minnesota's class up as a spectacular class. For a 1-11 team, sure - its good. But to me, having 2-4 JUCO's as your best gets (who only will have a few years in the system) AND a QB that has grade/injury issues, that's not a great class to me.
BTW - when I said a class in the low-30's... I was talking rival's team ranking. We'll get 22-25 players but I'd be happy with a 4th-5th place finish in the Big-10 with a class *ranked* in the low 30's...

DeAndre Jones committed to Vanderbilt today. One down.
http://michiganstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=760227
Now its down to Sterling Lucas, Glenn Winston, Taylor Hill, Mike Balogun.
I think Dantonio will be putting the press on Hill and Winston this weekend, with Winston obviously committing.
Balogun said he wants to play in the south in a recent article so I say that lowers our odds as Arkansas said they want him to visit and will offer then, if the offer falls through than our odds are good.
Lucas seems to be more interested in USC and NC state than MSU at this point, but things could change. A commitment from Winston and Hill should leave Lucas without a scholarship

He did get kicked off the team, twice. I read Meat Market where they follow Ole Miss, and Orgeron said how their first class they rushed and got kids who could play and not character kids at all. Hayword was one of those kids. I wish I had the book with me but there was one line I found hilarious where it said the first month of school Hayward racked up like $1000 in parking fines or something rediculous like that. He had bad grades, didn't go to class and got in trouble way too many times so they kicked him off the team. Then his momma brought him back and pleaded with coach O to let him on the team, saying he would never mess up again. But a little while later he and like 4 other players were caught in a party at a players apartment where there was underage drinking and the smell of marijuana. Well needless to say some people didnt pass their piss tests and some of those players were kicked off the team, Hayward one of them.

I really hope we land Winston. He looks like a great athlete who could contribute early. He also comes from Denby their coach has a reputation as a disciplinarian so he will likely take coaching well.

Is it a given that Perry will play DE instead of LB in college? And what about Jacquies Smith? Same thing?

Is Michigan interested in Winston at all? I see they're listed on his Scout profile, and that he attended their camp, yet they aren't on the Rivals list.

Shrimp,
"First of all, you're misinterpreting the meaning of what he said."
A: No I'm not. He said "stay." There is no specific reason or exceptions. It's a generic "stay." Besides, the sign was still there when he left. You could leave early for the NFL in 1989.
"Second, I don't think MSU needs to adopt anything that Bo and Michigan use as a current slogan."
A: I agree. That's why I said "in some form or fashion."
"Or hell, let's adopt UM's slogan and then throw a sign up that says "Play Like Champions Today" on the wall so our players can touch it before they hit the field, since were not really interested in creating our own history."
A: See above. I didn't even suggest this. But, how about a green and white banner saying "Go Green. Your Varsity "S" Club Supports You." As the guys run out on the field, they can run under it and jump up and touch it. Oh, no . . . . That's like SCum. Forget that.

Hard to knock him on this decision. I wish he had visited State. Vandy is an instate school with great academics, plays an SEC schedule, and has a good coach. For a smart kid, who has his priorities in order, that is not a bad choice.
