I seem to be missing what Perry has done to make anyone think that he's a thug. Maybe the best way to deal with the possibility of a recruit committing elsewhere is to start trashing him in advance?

i started my business a 4 years ago. i won't bore you with the details or job descriptions. but i was a little fish in a fairly big pond, and as with most industries, mine was very cutthroat. there were a lot of companies doing what i do (a very narrow niche field, BTW), and most people had never heard of me.
well, some people had heard of me, and those people became my first customers. i never asked them why they went with me and not the big guys. i didn't have the nice store, i didn't have the fancy website or fleet of official vehicles. i didn't have the reputation. i was just a guy out there doing what i knew how to do to the best of my abilities.

fast forward 4 years, and my business continues to grow. i've had to hire people for various positions, get buildings, vehicles, etc, because the new projects and the new customers keep coming. and to this day, i have not done one iota of advertising, not so much as a listing in the phone book.
so, a lot of you may wonder why a certain recruit would take state over one of the big time programs. i wonder "why not?". i see MD working, and i can tell you that it will pay off. not on everybody, but there are certain guys who are going to sit down with him and they'll just know. they'll know that he's the real deal, and that they can trust him. that still goes a long way with some people.

I think this story is a GREAT way to sum up 's approach and I agree with it. Your customers are with you because they trust you, I'm sure a lot of these kids make their decisions on trust. I can tell you from the first press conference had, I had trust that he was the right man for the job. I can honestly say I NEVER had that trust in John L.
It really boils down to 17 and 18 year old kids making a life changing decision and it's easy for people on a message board to say choose MSU because of playing time or because I went there and it is a great school, but think about your decision when you were that age and why you made it…. Now magnify that with being wined and dined by every school you visit and told that you can come in play right away, make an impact on the program, get a degree and make it to the NFL. It would be a tough situation to be in at that age.

It's not serious or racist, it was the way he carried himself. Your mind assuming it was racially driven makes you a racist. Also, I have no idea how you got to your second comment. What I mean is high level athletes will have mean things said about them, their families, etc. It doesn't make it right, but it's a fact. I doubt that you've never said anything derogatory about a scUM player. I saw him at the OSU game, Ingram was conversational, and pleasant to everyone he came across. Perry, showed no emotion and seemed to turn his nose up to the majority of people he came across. He had a "I'm a bad ass recruit" look on his face the whole time. There are a many number of high school kids that I've coached that have the same demeanor of trying to be hard all the time. It isn't a good trait to have, bc most of those kids are doing it to keep up their personal image. And if all you're worried about is your image, college life will consume you and it will hurt the team, but more importantly the kid (see past college athletes from all schools and races who have experienced problems with the law). Throughout the day people have been giving me more insight into Perry in an educated way, unlike yourself. From what I've heard my initial opinion may be wrong, and I look forward to watching him and I hope that he will be a Spartan, and a damn good member of society as well. As for you, not all comments are racial charged, no one deserves to get raped, and anyone that utter that thought should seek help.

Maybe he just didn't want to be bothered and wanted to take in the game his own way? Maybe he is tired of being bugged by people and wants to be his own person? Maybe a million other reasons for his perceived "attitude" at the hoops game.
You gotta remember that recruits and their families DO read message boards and when you call someone a "thug", you never know who is reading it. The whole "well, get used to it" mantra is stupid and they aren't gonna think like that. Nick Perry didn't do anything to you or anyone else on the board to warrant being called a "thug".

I still wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at Miami.

I don't see any need for pessimism. This program has been hit pretty hard with Bobby Williams and JLS. We have things to live down. Even the Champs Sports bowl, it got so bad we had to send our quarterback away with the wide receivers and we hiked the ball to our tailback so that he could run either right or left.... ... We're repairing, ok!?
Everybody has his own style of selling. Coach D isn't a shyster, he's not going to have his recruiters calling up and getting angry with kids for committing elsewhere like Illinois allegedly did. Coach is getting the essentials right, there's discipline and it sounds as though the team is developing a lot of affection one for another. Football building is looking mighty impressive too. Coach is developing the goods to take out on the recruiting trail in future years. He seems to be working his butt off making the best of what he inherited (he can look at Kilimanjaro in picture books )
Smith- stud.
Hoover- taking classes, may play next year
Burrell- had interest from big time programs
Adams- supposed to be a stud
Ruhland- a lean 270 with plenty of room to grow
MacDonald- a track star OL!
Trawick- looks like a bruiser
....
I don't know, it looks like we've got some football players coming in.
No reason Ingram or Perry couldn't choose MSU. When Stanton chose us, he saw a program that was up and coming (oops ) When it happens it happens, big time recruits will cast their lot with the green and white. Does Perry want to be a starting MLB next year? Does he want to 'own' a football team, hey, does he want to 'own' the university. I remember an article in the State News many moons ago, 'They call me Killer'. It was about this stud linebacker named Carl Banks. Whatever, the program is on the rise and it doesn't hinge on even a few star recruits right now.
We picked up both Foles and Jordan after signing day last year. February 6 doesn't mean we're done this year, either.
People, be patient. The future looks good for

Well said, '86. I'd add Williams, Rolf and Martin (at least) to that list as well -- they seem to be diamonds in the rough.
I couldn't agree more, regardless of what happens from here on out.

Yeah, I like some of these football players, I think Coach has an eye for undervalued stock. It's happening, isn't it?
BTW, did I read in USA Today that Rutgers is payin 102 million to add 14k seats to their stadium!?

Nope, must just be here. You do have to admit its been quite anticlimactic this year. I can say I really like what we have so far at least. With that I would rather bank extra schollies than use then on plan D's as people call them. Next years should be a little more positive I hope

As someone else pointed out, this class was front-end loaded. If we were signing our 3* kids and Smith down the stretch, you'd be singing a different tune.
The last non-"anticlimactic" class we had was 2004. Boy, those kids sure did pay dividends.

I guess by anticlimactic I mean by not havin a list of big names that could fall to us. Perry and Ingram are of course but the drop off from there is substantial. I just feel last year was a lot of fun even though w/ barksdale, rojo, everson, foles, jordan...but ya never know. our prime source of info is spartanmag and they just suck at delivering

The other prospect for whom BYU is saving a scholarship is Hamani Stevens, an offensive lineman from Hemet High in Southern California. Stevens told The Tribune on Saturday that he had decided between BYU and Oregon but was not going to announce the decision until this week.
In a text message late Tuesday night, he said, "I haven't [committed] yet. UCLA came today so it made it a little harder to decide. Kinda turned up the heat."
According to a source at BYU, coach Bronco Mendenhall will or has visited Stevens and Kaveinga in their homes this week.

"It's probably between Michigan State, West Virginia, Pitt and Ohio State right now," Gardiner said. "I still need some time to think about it. I'll decide before signing day, but I'm not sure when. I'm still just trying to think it all out."
