Det News Blue Chip Article - Somewhat Disgusting

The Detroit News' Blue Chip Recruits: Sounding off on the recruiting process

Burrell: " I didn't receive a scholarship offer from Michigan. That was the school I always wanted to go to. It was kind of disappointing they didn't offer me. I worked real hard to receive an offer."

I think Ryan Wheat said something along the same lines last year but that is just the reality we have to face for not but hopefully with commits like Norman we will not have to worry about that much longer

Just a FYI, there some question about the whether or not that quote was really made on Spartan Mag.

Based on what we know about Burrell, first to commit to the class and a cornerstone to this class, I find it hard to believe, lending credence to the question of accuracy of the quote.

I questioned that as well. If he was really waiting for a um offer, why would he commit so early.

College: Michigan

Best recruiting experience: It was Michigan State. They were the first school to offer me. I love the defensive coaches there, the way they came into the city to recruit.

Worst recruiting experience: Soon after I committed to U-M, there were a number of schools -- Tennessee, Michigan State, Illinois and Wisconsin that contacted me after Lloyd Carr announced he was retiring. It got stressful again. It was like, 'Wow, I thought I committed already.' I told them to hold off. If the new staff at U-M didn't work out. I'd have a back-up plan.

Why not MSU? It was a like a spiritual thing. I was at church. My preacher was talking about staying at home. Home is what you need. At the time, I was considering Nebraska and MSU, along with Michigan. I thought the Lord was talking to me. I got the chills. I looked at my grandmother (Connie Bass), she looked at me and said I should stay at home. Later that night, I called coach Carr and told him I was coming. I'm a spiritual person and I felt the Lord was telling me to stay close to home.

Best recruiting trip was State but the Lord told him to stay close to home? How far is E.Lansing from Detroit, an hour? How far is Ann Arbor from Detroit, an hour?

My God is this kid ridiculous........

I was thinking the same thing.

Someone should do a little digging here, because something doesn't seem right about that.

I have no problem with him wanting to go to church and being a good citizen. Need more people like that. But if he truely wanted to stay at home, i think there are colleges closer to him than both MSU and SCum.

BTW

MSU to Detroit Country Day HS is 74 miles at 1hr 13min drive

SCum to Detroit Country Day HS is 38 miles at 40min drive

Well then it's obvious why he'd want to stay "home" vs. going all the way to EL.

Worst recruiting experience: It was to Notre Dame (junior day). Nobody talked to me. They avoided me. It was terrible. We drove there that day and drove right back. It did make my decision easier. It was either Notre Dame or Michigan.

Worst recruiting experience: The Notre Dame visit last year (on junior day). They kind of seemed interested in me. It seemed fine. But when we (Khoury family) called back we got no reply. One of my coaches (defensive coordinator Jerry Angers) even called and they didn't reply to his call. If you're not interested in me, why don't you just tell me?
I know they got a great class anyway but you think they would treat kids better than that. I don't mind seeing their reputation taking a hit.

Considering the last several years, we got a class as good as we coud expect. We are not going to get 4 and 5 stars until our coaches figure out how not to lose games that we should win or are leading in late in the game. To be honest, if I was good enough to go to USC or Ohio State, I would go over Michigan State. But never to UM.

Anyone know if Burrell has been approached/asked about this?
