He was under the impression riding his brother`s coat-tails would also work in the classroom.

Basically his grades weren't good enough.

If he gets his grades up he could land somewhere.

"I think I have to get my GPA up. I have to get all A's and I am working hard at it, so I should be able to do it," said Johnson. "I took [the test], but I didn't study for it and I didn't do real good on it. I just wanted to see how I would do on the first time.

not the best attitude to get the grades up, and it appears (since this story was in November) that he hasnt either.

The kid takes ownership of the situation (has to get the grades up) and is working hard at it, what in your opinion would make his attitude better towards getting his grades up.
If you are talking about the test quote, I'm assuming he was talking about the SAT or ACT, so what if he didn't want to study the first time he took it. What does that have to do with his grades?

yes, I was referring to the test quote. It was odd to me to just take a test without studying for it....maybe hoping he could get by without studying first vs. trying to nail it the first time around. Mindset IMHO I guess.

I would bet a majority of kids don't study for the ACT

But if you've never taken anything like the ACT or SAT, have testing problems, it can be very hard. We don't know his sitiuation, so it could be hard to comment on that kind of thing.
