We have three spots open as of right now. Do you expect Coach D to swoop in and grab Cody Petit, Adam Schnied and Shamari Benton tomorrow if we lose out on Nunez, Conway and Jones? Of course not. We are in a much stronger position as a program than we were a year ago.

There is a lot of talent in 2010 certainly but we will see what happens. Obviously a lot of us are counting on a few Michigan kids fulfilling their potential and if they don't we may have to look out of state for a little while.
Clearly there will be new targets in 2010 emerging in the coming months but it isn't a slam dunk that we haul in a top 15 class next year. This year we hit on a lot of Plan A's, to early to tell if we will do that for next year. You think about it and we hit Plan A's or close to it for QB, TE, RB, WR, OL and LB. Could argue CB as well if you wanted to.

Craig Drummond is a major DE prospect who just de-commited from the Zooker yesterday (perhaps because of Buchanan?), and I would have to believe that we really go after him as well. His offer sheet is ridiculous. You still have Nunez out there (for now), and Jarius Jones is a possibility. Noboday has gotten any feedback from Henry Conway on his visit, so it looks like he may be headed elsewhere. Justin Jones is another kid we are getting in touch with. He is an enourmous DE prospect out of Georgia that originally commited to Kentucky. The staff will not go after DJ Hunter, and Brad MacDougal is headed to Colorado it would seem. Kevin Muma (K)could still end up with a ship. The coaches really like him it seems. Farrington's not gonna happen, and if Delano Collins ended up with a ship at this point, it would reek of the Zac Heuter schollie last year. Sticking bodies on the team because we have to is not something we have to do anymore, especially with the talent available in 2010. We will only have 17 spots for next year unless we bank some scholarships or kids leave.
|
You're right Quinn hasn't "re-committed" to BC because he's always been a verbal to them, a soft verbal is still a verbal commitment. I must've missed where he said in his article that he wanted to play close to home after being at prep school for so long. You should probably know what you are talking out before you try to call someone out.
No, Craig Drummond did not de-commit because of Buchanan. Speculation is that Drummond tried to enroll early at Ill. and was denied entry, that is why he is looking at offer schools and decommitted. I doubt he would be able to get into MSU if he can't get into Ill., unless the requirements are different for EE. If he can't get into MSU then why would we go after him?
Nunez is going to Pitt IMO with his friend. Though maybe MSU has a chance, but I doubt it. I would think that MSU leads for Jairus Jones, but Iowa and OK State are the competition. As long as his commitment wouldn't impact Dontae Johnson I hope we get him. Who knows with Conway, I've seen some people think he is cincy bound, but I still think MSU gets him, though who knows right now. BC fired its head coach and they won't retain the O-Coor. With that kind of stability I think we have a great shot at getting him.

we will have plenty of scholarships to go around in 2010. banking scholarships in football is usually a bad move

I'm not advocating banking scholarships or anything, but by my count next year's football team will have 17 Sr.'s (including KDC) and 14 Jr.'s (including Jenrett). Correct me if I am wrong but it looks like we will be low on scholarships to hand out for the next two years.
EDIT: The 14 Jr.'s also includes Ish Johnson. I wasn't sure if he redshirted this year.

I am not sure what is sealed and what isn't sealed but the Middletown Journal reported on Friday that he also kicked in his girlfriends locked door and assualted her. This happened as a juvenile so I don't know if this will factor into his sentencing. Forget about this guy, he may in fact need to do time on this charge.
I, and I think most MSU people, can handle kids who make mistakes but are good kids deep down. MSU has had these people in the past and usually they grow up. However, I don't know that I want a guy in EL that is a convicted felon who also beats women...thos individuals generally don't just clean up their acts all of a sudden.

Doc, felons aren't allowed to play at MSU, it's a university rule.

We recruited him early but he crossed us off of his list very early on. I would not expect us to jump into his list of consideration.

I'm unsure but it's interesting that Scout has MSU, Ill. and Ole Miss. as the only 3 schools he's interested in. There have been some reports that he may stick with Ill., we'll know in two weeks for sure. Here is the link to the page and a new article:

How many offensive lineman has CMU sent to the NFL within, say, the last 5 years? How bout MSU in the same time span? I'll take any offensive lineman that CMU is recruiting, period.

We are on Scout listed as his top 3 with Ill. and Ole Miss. I read that he will be able to enroll after this semester. It probably depends on how bad he wants to go to Ill. and if we are pursuing him. Anyone, A. Trieu, have any info regarding MSU and where we stand or if he is likely to leave Ill.? Hopefully, MSU can get his last visit.

Now we know why DJ Hunter suddenly dropped off OSU's radar last summer right after supposedly getting an offer and why we suddenly stopped hearing anything about him on the MSU sites right around the same time: turns out his recent firearm escapades aren't his first brush with the law.

The Middletown Journal reported that Hunter was also arrested in July and charged as a juvenile with aggravated trespassing, assault and criminal damaging after kicking in the door at a residence and assaulting a girl.

Just created the Craig Drummond thread and now I can't even open it!
This used to happen with game threads during the football season because of the embedded videos that I would forget to delete, and I see now that his ESPN profile has a video.
Mods, please do me a favor and just delete that video applet. TIA.
And here's the reason I started the thread:

Hoebing - TE, or could bulk up and move inside to G
I like the versatility of this class with respect to the interior lines on both sides of the ball to compliment the bookend OT's in Barrent and Conway.
Overall this class is outstanding, addressed RB, QB, LB, OL, TE and DL very well. With Dixon and White likely to play DB and CB respectedly, we added there too.
We are at 20 verbals, 1-2 more to go. Freeman being backdated to 2008 apparently.

With conway on board does that mean the last spot is either Jones or a DE? Does Jones get cut?

I hadn't heard that any of our early enroll recruits were being backdated...don't even think that we had any 2008 schollies left. Likely only one spot left at most as far as I know.

I would think that most likely Simpkins at DE is the first priority, but doesn't have an offer yet. If we offer Simpkins he will most likely commit this weekend, if we don't offer then we will compete with Iowa and OK State for Jones. I know there are reports, but I wouldn't competely rule out Drummond until a credible site lists him as a commit to Ole Miss. Even if they don't though, it seems very unlikely that MSU will get Drummond. If the staff doesn't offer Simpkins and misses on Jones they could offer Baskins or Pitts. If this happens I would rather see the scholarship used towards the 2010 class.

I saw that on Scout, they had Freeman backdated to the 2008 class. Thought it was odd, if not true, we have one spot left.
Nice to be a couple weeks from signing day with a full class full of good players at positions of need, and not scrambling to fill spots at the last minute, and carrying scholarships forward.
What are we looking at for 2010, 17 scholarships?
