officially a 5 star recruit now! Nice work Will for going out and showing them you're one of the best in the nation.

Can you say 3-4 defense?
Hoover/Drone/Rush, Worthy/Treadwell, & Wilson/Neely/Freeman as your down lineman.
Norman, Gordon, Jones, & Gholston as your linebackers...

You need bigger lineman to run a 3-4. Hoover would work and maybe Treadwell as a DT. However you really need to have a Cody like NT to run a successfull 3-4. Maybe on certain downs it would work but not as a base defense with our personnel IMO.

Worthy could be that guy if he could add 10 pounds and keep his athleticism...

The NT in a 3-4 doesn't always have to be big it depends on what type of system you like to run. Watch Jay Ratiliff this weekend for Dallas he is not a big NT but is a beast because of his quickness and penetration. The size of the other two DT is usually bigger than a standard DE of a 3-4 though. Neeley would be undersized for a DE.

Is anyone else concerned that Gholston seemingly wants to play OLB in a 4-3 defense? If Gordon cannot cover a RB out of the backfield, can we expect a 6-7 260 lb. Gholston to?
And don't start with the "we're converting to a 3-4". We heard that from the staff all last summer that they would employ some 3-4, but I never once saw 4 LBs on the field at the same time (not counting Norman/Jones lining up at DE).

just because you play a 3-4 doesn't mean that every linebacker has to cover
he can be the rusher
or even better, he can spy the quarterback and keep pryor from rushing for 150 yards (if he's still around)
at 6-7, they could drop him straight back to guard them middle where he can tip passes etc
so no, I'm not worried about running a 3-4 with a 6-7 in, 5 star linebacker

That's fine and I agree. I am just not convinced we'll be running a 3-4 like so many people on here seem to think. Do you think he will have the same role as a OLB in a 4-3?

I would love it if they used some 3-4 concepts. the 3-4 is known to be more effective against spread offenses. Watch the Chargers when they play the Colts in the AFC championship game. Peyton is known to struggle vs 3-4s. Can you imagine moving Gholston around and using him like LT? (the original LT not LaDanian Tomlinson)

I know that, I was goofing around at the prospect of someone misinterpreting the acronym "LT" as Tomlinson, hence the use of " " and the ridiculousness of a 6'7 260 pound running back.
Gholston's going to have a huge impact no matter what position he plays on D.

Assuming he hasn't lost too much speed from the weight gain a 6'7 260 some odd pounds guy with 4.6 speed that has dominated from a Linebacker position is amazing, he does needs some work because he is somewhat raw but once he gains technique from getting coached up he has a chance to be a first round NFL draft pick in the future.
You can't teach a gigantic man his athleticism you just can't... congrats on the 5th star Mr Too Tall.

We didn't really have the personnel for it this year. With Jones coming back, we will definitely have enough good linebackers to support a 2 deep in the 3-4.

So I said to the guy, "I noticed your Michigan sweatshirt, did you go there"? He replied "No, I have always been a fan though. I actually bought this at Walmart."

We all should remember that these recruits google their own names and read these threads. At least they can be comical about it.
