Roundhead, I suggest you see the movie World Trade Center. While I realize this is a Hollywood recreation. It does remind us of the size of the WTC. And the enormous weight of the upper floors compacting on the entire building. I think people forget just how big those towers were. They were HUGE and the weight of top floors collapsing on a weakened structure was amazing. It is easy to see how the weight pancaked the buildings.
It is also easy to see how the collapse damaged the building around. Pieces of the building were falling off prior to the collapse and when they fell the hit other buildings. When you look at the WTC from a distance it seems small footprint but in reality they were large and created a lot a damage in the surrounding area when they fell.
