Joel is an old school Democratic, backroom politician with connections galore and a substantial personal fortune. Not to mention it would take many of you doing something you may not particularly like to get him out - voting Republican. An independent candidate CAN NOT win a Trustee spot at one of the Big Three universities because the power and money behind each particular party is simply too much to overcome.
What could we do to at least give Joel a run for his money? IMHO, the first step would be to start some type of letter/email writing campaign to the state Republican party explaining the MSU community's problems with him and encouraging the party to nominate a substantial candidate against him. The letters should also pledge the two most important political commodities: 1) time and 2) money. If this is anything more than griping, we must be willing to donate both volunteer time next year during the campaign of Candidate X and also donate our dollars.
Sorry for the rant, but I know the uphill battle that would be necessary. I, for one, am willing to help but it would take a massive commitment by many more of us to make even a dent in Joel's vote totals next year.

Anne Norlander (Calhoun County clerk) is electable with the right support. There are a few other candidates that I am trying to think of right now but remember, the state parties select these candidates at their conventions. So, they have to be able to get through that political quagmire before they ever reach the ballot.
