I'm showing my age, but I remember a time when the only ones who followed recruiting were the coaches and those actually being recruited. Fans didn't know much about the kids that were coming into the program, but relied on the fact the coaches knew what they were looking for in a football player. There was no star system or self appointed recruiting gurus telling the general public that this kid was a can't miss prospect because freshman couldn't play, and the only thing that mattered was how they performed on the field.
I guess I long for those days instead of seeing fans get upset because some kid we know nothing about decides to select a school.
The other thing I detest is the media circus that is perpetuated by these kids when they announce where they intend to be playing. Believe me, nobody outside of their respective states (other than college football coaches) knew much about Charles Smith, Gene Washington and George Webster. The concensus was that if these players were coming to play football at
MSU then they obviously were good enough in the mind of the only person that mattered, Duffy Daugherty. The same holds true today. The only people these recruits truly matter are Mark Dantonio and his staff.
How many of you are going to whine and moan if some lowly two star recruit ends up being all that and a bag of chips while some highly rated kid ends up rarely seeing the field. Whose fault is it that the low rated recruit became a star and the highly rated kid is never heard from? Not the gurus that's for certain.
Let's remember that of the thousands of young men who play high school football, only a small percentage will ever end up playing college football. If a kid is receiving any attention from a D1 program, that alone tells me he has set himself above the majority who play the game in high school and will never sniff an offer.
Regardless of the star system, I will welcome all those players who are offered and sign to play football at
MSU. I trust the fact that Mark Dantonio and his staff know how to properly evaluate talent and have the ability to develop each players talent to their full potential.
