Another thing to think about: The SAG contracts expire in June. There is a possibility that the writers strike could drag on until June or longer. If the actors strike while the writers are still out on strike, can you image what that is going to do to the entertainment industry? We might not even get a season of Lost in 2009.

I don't know why the the network wouldn't. This is a hit series, and there would be no reason not to extend it.
I couldn't find the exact article I saw, but in this one, an interview with one of the Ex. Producers, they hint that they are going to do a total of 48, even if one season needs to be 24.
