I just thought that was a major whiff on the part of the writers, considering only a select few at that point knew Charlie was gone, and even fewer actually knew how he died and for what supposed cause.

Going back an episode, here's the major whiff that annoyed me:
Locke throws the knife into Naomi, and no one (especially Jack the doctor) checks to see her condition, or maybe just maybe thinks about pulling the knife out of her. So, she lays there dying for what 15? 30? minutes before staggering off into the jungle.
Don't you think that Jack would have at least checked her out. Whatever, who cares.
