The kid takes ownership of the situation (has to get the grades up) and is working hard at it, what in your opinion would make his attitude better towards getting his grades up.
If you are talking about the test quote, I'm assuming he was talking about the SAT or ACT, so what if he didn't want to study the first time he took it. What does that have to do with his grades?
