I just thought that was a major whiff on the part of the writers, considering only a select few at that point knew Charlie was gone, and even fewer actually knew how he died and for what supposed cause.

I think you can assume that information was passed around off-screen. Desmond was with the group and I would think that plenty of folks would have asked him "hey, where's Charlie?"
