Ordinary People (1980)
Conrad Jared (played by Timothy Hutton) is approached in his bedroom one afternoon by his father, Calvin Jared (played by Donald Sutherland), who tells him "hey Connie, I was able to get those Michigan State tickets". This was the immediate aftermath of the Magic/Kelser
NCAA championship in 1979. In another ironic twist, the movie was filmed on location in Lake Forest, IL, where my Sister In Law and her family lived 2 years, and she graduated from the actual high school where much of the film was shot, before moving on to
MSU herself.
Rudy (1993)
Rudy Ruettiger (played be Sean Astin) is sitting in a bar shortly after arriving in South Bend, and at the beginning of one scene says "Now there's a game to remember, 1966 against Michigan State. Bob Gladieux caught the greatest pass in Notre Dame's football history!"
Hoop Dreams (1994)
William Gates is being interviewed in his bedroom at the beginning of his junior year at St. Joseph HS (Westchester, IL) while going through his many recruiting letters. The scene begins with him reading out loud a letter from Georgetown, afrer which he says "...Bobby Knight called...Michigan State, boy, do they EVER call!" A few seconds later, he shows the camera a brochure about
MSU basketball with the Breslin Center featured prominently on the cover (It says "Michigan State Spartans")
Knute Rockne All American (1940)
At the end of the movie, a voice over tribute to Rockne rattles off several names and schools explaining what many of his former players and coaching proteges ("these are Rockne's boys") were doing at that time in college football: "...Charley Bachman, Michigan State...(former MSC Head Coach and Notre Dame Four Horseman) James Crowley, Fordham..."
