Happens more in football, but of course the football season is usually over by then. Doing it in basketball means you could still play in the conference/postseason portions.

The reason it isn't done is because a player wouldn't be ready to play in the conference and postseason games with barely any practice with a team.
Any player doing that would basically burn a year of eligibility. Now graduating early, enrolling in December, and redshirting for that year would probably be very beneficial.
