Good question. They don't...sorta. I've only skimmed the explanations and my physics knowledge is intuitive, not mathematical (which means it's often wrong). There has also been a lot of research into that difference, and the "shape" of the atmospheric temperature in general. It matches up pretty good with predictions with the caveat that there was a lot of interesting research going on several years ago because they were getting odd results. In the current framework it pretty much makes sense. (sorry..Friday night..I've got plans...I can get links later)
