Seinfeld was kind of a fringe show (or at least more of a cult following than mainstream) it's first couple of seasons when it was on Wednesdays, opposite Home Improvement. Cheers ended, Seinfeld took it's 9 p.m. Thursday slot, and it became a cultural icon.
Having said that, if it did get more exposure, I don't know if enough people would "get it" to make it a huge hit. The funniest parts were usually the most subtle.
