You're half correct. I don't think it would give Obama a gain, but would lose McCain a few votes.
Fact of the matter is that most Americans still give the national security nod to the Republicans for preventing another attack since 9/11. Another terrorist attack would erode that trust - I guess we can agree to disagree.
