Well, although I agree that the US could probably stand to work on itself some more, while working to heal some of our reputation in the international community (though I have to accept that some people will hate us, no matter what), I don't think the US's involvement in those two countries is irrelevant, at all.
The US's presence in Iraq is currently one of the only things holding the country fairly together. I think that a civil war is eminent, and although I would rather not see it, at this point, it is jeopardizing the US more than the war would, even though we have essentially sparked this.
As for Afghanistan, I would have agreed with you a year ago, but the US's failure to close in and finish the Taliban, and go to Iraq has kept them alive. Although we have a greater coalition in Afghanistan (Canada, namely), the fact that we didn't have the "Mission Accomplished" is now making Afghanistan much more relevant.
