Amtrak takes like 2-3 hours more than driving, so I'm thinking of just driving to Gary or any other location an hour or so outside of Chicago and taking a commuter bus of train the rest of the way. Anyone ever do this?
This is the one I found so far, leaves Gary and goes to Millenium Station.

Any better ones? Any help is much appreciated.

If you're taking the South Shore, I'd recommend utilizing just about any other station besides the Gary stations.
Hammond, Michigan City, even South Bend. In fact if you're staying the weekend I'd suggest parking the car at the South Bend airport, and taking the train the rest of the way. A little more expensive with parking and train fare but then again all the less spent on gas.
