the intentional walk is almost always f$#$#ing stupid unless the runner on 3rd is the winning run (last of the 9th).
even when it "works" (i.e. the next batter doesn't hit a HR) half the time it doesn't work because you advance the batting order for the opponents and you hand them free baserunners, and you magnify the problems caused by subsequent opposing batters, and you set up big innings in subsequent innings by allowing the opposing offense to start deeper in the order, plus you add to the deterioration of your pitcher's confidence by saying "you suck, you can't get this guy out."
