I understand that the Constitution grants the right to bear arms and it would need to be amended or reinterpreted to remove the right to own a handgun. But just becaue it's in the Constitution doens't mean that it's "right". And I agree with you that an Amendment to remove this right will probably never happen (sadly).

It is unlikely that the US will be invaded in the forseeable future. It is more likely that there would be some kind of revolution against the US government from within, where an armed populace may actually be needed. Of course, as long as the armed forces sided completely with the government it would be a slaughter, as would any attack from another nation.
