As for how the doctors tell some kids, particularly athletes and their parents, ask for a projection after an MRI is done. The doctor can use the MRI to tell whether the epiphyseal plates, or more commonly growth plates, have fused. If they have the cartilage that makes up a child's growth plate has started to ossify and growth has stopped. The doctors project how much more you will grow on just how much if any ossification has occurred.
