Country Day's Fowler among state's rising stars
Bennie Fowler, WR, Detroit Country Day, 6-foot-1.5/185 pounds/4.36 in 40: Jonas Gray (Notre Dame) and Kenny Demens (Michigan) got most the ink last year for the Yellow Jackets, but had Bennie Fowler been healthy the entire season, his name would have been right up there also.
"The first couple of games I played well," Fowler said. "I scored a couple of touchdowns. Then on a punt return in the homecoming game I broke my collarbone. I sat out like eight or nine weeks."
Fowler made it back for the state semifinals, during which he scored the winning touchdown. He followed that up with a seven-catch performance in the state final. That was enough to spur offers from Indiana, Toledo and Eastern Michigan. His recruitment went into overdrive, however, after he attended the Michigan State camp in late June and ran a blazing 4.36 in the 40. The Spartans offered the next day. Now Notre Dame, Tennessee, Michigan and the rest of the Big Ten (except for Ohio State) are showing interest in this raw but talented prospect.
