Edwards is on the appropriations sub-committee, right? i think that's what i read and that's a pretty powerful position. He's a democratic congressman that has been able to keep his seat in a very republican area...even after switching districts do to redrawing the lines.
I also don't think the VP is that important of a choice...(except in McCain's case...because i doubt he'll live to see 2012). People don't vote for the VP. how many people remember who the VP candidate was from any given election if they don't win? How many VP's can you name from the history books?

I agree that VPs are historically unimportant. However, I'd say that with some clear needs for both candidates, the VP picks are more important this year. Also, someone like Bayh can tip a state, which could make the difference.
